How do I introduce a grazing muzzle to my horse?

If your horse has never worn a grazing muzzle you want to start by introducing it to them slowly. If you put the muzzle on and throw them out to pasture to fend for themselves you aren't setting them up for positive first experience. When working with your horse be sure to practice patience, allowing them adequate time to learn just like training any new skill/trick. Here are three simple steps for training your horse for the muzzle life:

STEP 1

Place the grazing muzzle on your horse and start adjusting the fit. You want it to be snug enough to not rub off, but not too snug that it rubs. Easy Breathe Muzzles have a 5-way slider buckle fit system that makes this step easy. There is also a "Quick Grip" release strap that you will want to secure proper safety.

STEP 2

Feed your horse some hay, grass, or other forage by hand through the muzzle opening. This will help improve their confidence and understanding that they can still eat and drink with a grazing muzzle on.

STEP 3

Start having your horse wear a grazing muzzle for one hour, then slowly increase the length of wear time over a period of a week or two. You should always remove muzzles regularly to check fit and assess any wear points.
