How do I clean my horse's blanket/sheet?

Horse blankets and sheets can be an expensive investment so it's important to care for them properly to ensure their longevity. It's best practice to regularly evaluate the condition of your horse's blankets to prevent future problems or safety issues. Follow the steps below to clean your Tough1 blanket or sheet:

Hand-Washed (Recommended)

  1. Using a medium-stiff body brush remove as much loose hair and dirt as possible before washing
  2. Wash your blanket by hand using cold water and a mild laundry detergent
  3. Hang blanket to dry in a well-ventilated space

Hand washing your blankets and sheets may extend the life of the waterproof properties over machine washing.

Machine Wash

  1. Using a medium-stiff body brush remove as much loose hair and dirt as possible before washing
  2. Adjust all straps to their shortest length or remove, if possible
  3. Using a commercial grade machine, choose the cold water cycle and use a mild detergent
  4. Do not machine dry. Hang blanket to dry in a well-ventilated space

Waterproofing

The lifespan of waterproofing depends entirely on weather exposure and care. But even with proper care, the most expensive blankets will still eventually need to be re-waterproofed. We recommend using a horse blanket-specific waterproofer, but tent/camping waterproofer can be an affordable option in a pinch. Be sure to follow the waterproofer instructions and test in an inconspicuous spot first. For best coverage, the blanket should be clean and dry.

Tips & Tricks

  • Repair any rips or tears prior to washing and waterproofing to prevent additional damage.
  • If a spot remover is to be used, be sure to first test on an inconspicuous area.
  • Be sure the blanket/sheet is completely dry before storing to prevent mold and mildew.
