Types of Horsewear

Turnout Blankets are made of tough, weather resistant materials to keep horses warm and protected during cold temperatures and harsh weather conditions.
There are many factors to consider when deciding to blanket a horse or not - not all horses need to be blanketed in cold weather.

Stable blankets are typically designed with quilted construction with materials that are not weather resistant. Because of this, stable blankets are not designed for turnout use but rather for keeping a horse warm in the trailer or in a stall.

Turnout sheets are made of the same tough, weather resistant materials as a turnout blanket but they do not have any poly fill for warmth. Often turnout sheets are used to protect a horse from rain, wind and dirt.
A blanket liner can always be added under a turnout sheet to provide a horse extra warmth on cool nights.

As the name suggests, this type of horssewear is for fly protection. Fly sheets are made from lightweight and breathable mesh that provides protection from insects and can also provide UV protection from the hot summer sun.
Do to the material type, not all fly sheets are durable - be sure to choose the right mesh material for your horse's lifestyle.

A blanket liner is commonly made from fleece and can be used alone or under a blanket/sheet. Used alone, a fleece blanket liner can act as a cooler to help wick moisture away from sweaty hair coats. Adding a liner under a blanket or sheet will provide a horse an additional layer of warmth. This type of horsewear can be very helpful for areas with quick and regular temperature flucuations, saving you money on your horse's wardrobe.

A newer addition to the horsewear family are thearapeutic sheets. These are not used for protection from the elements but they rather offer soothing/healing properties. Different types include ceramic infused, magnetic, cooling, and more!
What is Denier?
Denier is the strength of the outer shell, determined by the thread's thickness. The higher the denier the stronger the blanket.

What is Poly Fill?
Poly fill is measured in grams and describes the blanket's warmth. The higher the fill, the warmer the blanket.

How to Measure
Tough1 blankets and sheets come in 2" or 3" increments and sizing options depending on style. To ensure a correct fit, measure your horse by referencing the image. If your horse falls between sizes, round up to the closest available size. The snuggit neck and front buckle closures on Tough1 blankets allow for a custom fit to be achieved once on your horse.

Blanket Care
1. Tough1 blankets should be hand washed in cool water using a mild detergent.
2. If washing in a machine, use one that is commercial grade.
3. Remove any loose hair/dirt and adjust straps to shortest length or remove them before machine washing.
4. If a spot remover is needed, test on an inconspicuous area.
5. Blanket should be hung and allowed to air dry.
