As equestrians, our equipment is essential. After enough use, every piece of leather needs a little TLC. One of Tough1's retail partners, Knightdale Horse Sports, located in North Carolina, takes in a variety of used tack and equipment — some of which need more attention than others. They’ve shared some of their expert tack cleaning tips and tricks with us so we can share them with you!
Clean tack isn't just about appearance — it's safer, more durable, and more sustainable. You can think of it as a skin care routine, since that's exactly what it is!
Used tack often comes with signs of wear: barn dust, sweat buildup, mud, and more. Letting this residue sit for too long can dry out leather, weaken stitching, and eventually lead to cracking or breakage. Regular cleaning is essential for long-lasting, high-performing tack. To make each item as safe and functional as possible, every piece goes through a thorough inspection and cleaning process.
Whether a customer is consigning gear with us or browsing our selection of refurbished items, here's a behind-the-scenes look at how we bring used tack back to life.
Our Tack Cleaning Process
- Inspect & Disassemble We start by fully inspecting the item for wear, damage or loose stitching. This includes removing the stirrups, undoing buckles and checking every part for hidden grime or potential issues.
- Deep Clean Using leather-safe cleaners like glycerin saddle soap, we remove layers of dirt, sweat and residue. This step is key not only for appearance but for preserving the integrity of the leather.
A toothpick or soft brush helps get into the crevices. Most important: always rinse thoroughly. Leaving soap behind can dry into the leather and cause more harm than good. A damp sponge works well for rinsing.
For mold or mildew, we use a diluted solution of white vinegar (or hydrogen peroxide for tougher cases) in a spray bottle. Wipe clean with a towel and allow the leather to air dry completely before moving on. - Condition & Nourish Dry leather is brittle and prone to cracking. Restoring its moisture keeps it supple and strong. For very dry leather, neatsfoot oil is a reliable choice — just note it may darken the leather.
For less severe dryness, olive oil is a gentler option that won’t over-darken. Let the leather absorb each layer slowly, and avoid over-oiling, which can weaken the fibers over time. - Detail & Polish Metal parts like buckles and stirrups are polished with appropriate metal cleaners. Fun tip: bits can be polished with toothpaste!
We finish by buffing the leather to a soft sheen with a microfiber cloth.
- Reassemble & Final Inspection Once every part is cleaned, conditioned and dried, we reassemble the item and give it one last inspection — checking both safety and presentation.
Fun tip: Bits can be polished with toothpaste!
Daily Maintenance Tips
The process above is our deep cleaning method, but regular maintenance can keep your tack in better shape between full cleanings.
Here are some tips we recommend to our customers:
- After each ride, wipe down tack with a damp cloth to remove sweat and dirt before it dries.
- Use conditioning creams in moderation to maintain moisture, but be sure to clean off any buildup over time, as some products can settle into creases.
- Avoid spray-on cleaners for daily use; these are best for quick touch-ups before a show and often leave residue.
- If you use grip products, always clean them off immediately afterward, as they can attract dust and damage leather over time.
Before each ride, take a few minutes to inspect your tack for safety and readiness — a quick check can prevent bigger problems later.
At Knightdale Horse Sports, we’re committed to preserving the quality and value of every piece of tack that comes through our doors. Whether you're shopping for affordable refurbished gear or consigning items that need a refresh, our cleaning process ensures everything is safe, functional and ready for the next ride.
Got used tack? Bring it by — we're happy to help it shine again.
